Episode Synopses

Episode 1
While Mariko is on a month-long vacation, the Forensics Department is restructured and she is promoted to chief investigator. When she returns, she finds not only two new, elite staffers, but news that "No. 12" has struck again. Over the past year, three detectives have been killed. When found, they had been stabbed twelve times. The murderer had left his mark, "No. 12," on each of the bodies. The pressure is on to find the killer and Mariko must rely on her hunches again.

Episode 2
Sachiko, a jewelry designer, is killed in her own home. While investigating, Mariko discovers Sachiko's little son hiding in a closet. The boy seems unable to speak--perhaps due to the shock of witnessing his mother's murder.

Episode 3
Nozomi, the daughter of a technology company president is kidnapped. Her abductor sends her family a videotape showing Nozomi tied up, with an electrical cord connecting her to a timebomb. It's a race against time to find her.

Episode 4
A bank robber gets away with 50 million yen. Police corner him in a video store where he takes the customers hostage. He doesn't realize that one of his hostages is Junko, a detective, who secretly contacts the police on her cell phone.

Episode 5
A man is found dead on a riverbank. It appears he had been struck in the abdomen with a blunt object, then had drowned when he fell and his face landed in a large water puddle. The chief suspect is a 17-year-old boy.

Episode 6
The only clue to the identity of a corpse after a fire, is a cellular phone. However, the person who calls that phone says he met the victim only a week ago. From what that person recalls, Mariko deduces that the victim spoke a Kagoshima dialect.

Episode 7
A female office worker is killed. Mariko finds a button stuffed in her mouth. The following day, there is a similar murder. Both victims had approached the police about being stalked. The handwriting on notes received by both, matched.

Episode 8
Mariko's old teacher surrenders himself to police, saying he was responsible for a hit-and-run accident. However, when the scene is checked, there are signs of a possible accident, but the victim is nowhere to be found.

Episode 9 Final Episode.
A woman is found murdered in criminal psychologist Muto's apartment. He had evaluated her a year ago when she had been charged with stalking. Muto approaches Mariko to ask her help in establishing his alibi.
