Investigator Mariko 1 (Kasoken no Onna)
As criminals become more sophisticated and crimes more complex, the police must turn to speedier and more scientific means of weeding through clues and narrowing down suspects. That's where the forensics labs come into play. Investigator Mariko (Sawaguchi Yasuko) is a highly talented forensics scientist who must dodge stereotypes, as well as disparaging comments from veteran detectives including her ex-husband (Watanabe Ikkei), the Chief of Detectives.

Episode Synopses

Episode 1
Mariko is a new investigator at the Kyoto Police Forensic Lab. Divorced four years ago, she has studied scientific investigation with the FBI in the U.S. A man falls to his death while viewing an annual Kyoto festival. Mariko is arrested when she loudly protests at being stopped for questioning. Detectives, expecting to see a suspect, are speechless to discover her locked up.

Episode 2
A man is found dead on a riverbank. After examining the body, Mariko lets it slip that the cause of death might be asphyxiation. She is chastised by Inspector Koba for making a comment that could complicate investigations. However, the autopsy seems to support her intuition.

Episode 3
Prof. Kawamura's assistant is found strangled to death on campus. From the evidence found at the scene, Inspector Koba suspects the professor, who turns out to be a hard nut to crack. Meanwhile, Mariko discovers that her ex and Junko are expecting a baby.

Episode 4
While on an outing with the Forensics team, a member happens upon a half-buried skeleton. According to the coroner's office, it belonged to a woman in her mid-twenties who was probably killed 7-10 years ago. Mariko requests a reconstruction of the head.

Episode 5
An employee at a science-based company is seriously injured when he opens a letter bomb. The newspapers receive a note from the perpetrator, blaming the company for destroying the environment. Forensics works to analyze the handwriting and some lipstick found on the note.

Episode 6
Mariko is asked to give a talk at an elementary school. A few days later, the security guard is found dead, with burns on his upper body. It's not clear whether it was suicide, murder, or an accident.

Episode 7
When Mariko is surfing the web one night, she is shocked when she sees scenes of a young woman being shot to death in a cellar-like room. Copying it onto a disk, she takes it in to work the next day, but nobody takes it seriously.

Episode 8
Someone tries to kill Mariko, but when he fails, kills himself instead. His gun had been used in the murder of a detective four years before. Mariko receives a call from a reporter who claims to have some information

Episode 9 - Final Episode.
Inspector Koba is critically injured in a shootout with Kurihara, who killed a detective four years ago. The gunman dies, but according to Koba, he had accomplices.
