Episode Synopses

Episode 1 (2/28/02)
A strange, bossy woman named Yayoi comes to live in the police residence compound. Not only does she claim to have the Magistrate's approval, she tells Hachibei that she knows Oyoshi, the wife who left him. A series of kidnappings stir the constables into action and who's right there nosing around? Who else, but Yayoi!

Episode 2 (3/7/02)
Hachibei has known Osumi since he started out as a constable. He taught Osumi who was an orphan to read and write, and thinks of her as a younger sister. She runs a small tavern and is married to Kanjiro, an aspiring cook who is training in Shinagawa. One day, a skeleton is found. Hachibei learns that the victim was killed about three months earlier and died of a stab wound. But that's not all he learns...

Episode 3 (3/14/02)
Hachibei tries to convince Mohei to retire from the Magistrates office and go into business. Meanwhile, corruption has been uncovered in the Construction Magistrate's office. The person responsible is ordered to commit harakiri, but Kyuzo isn't satisfied.

Episode 4 (3/21/02)
Osato, whose baby is about due, shows up at the Magistrate's office. She has lost her memory, and remembers only that the father of her baby is a patrolman. Ichirota goes to the tavern where she says she met the baby's father, and finds a dead body.

Episode 5 (3/28/02)
An apparent murder suicide is discovered in a little eatery. Then, Hachibei comes upon a young woman who has collapsed in front of the gate. He takes her in to care for her, but Gengo is sure he's seen her somewhere before.

Episode 6 (4/4/02)
Someone has been setting fires in Edo, but investigators have no luck in finding the culprit. Meanwhile, Magoeimon, who's known as a laggard, comes to Hachibei with a family problem.

Episode 7 (4/11/02)
The constables are after a gang of thieves. Kyuzo had nearly captured them some years ago, and at that time, a bystander had gotten killed. Meanwhile, Kyuzo's son befriends a candy peddler and tries to get her a position as a servant in his home.

Episode 8 (4/18/02)
One night, Inspector Aoyama is attacked by several men on the street. When he announces his name, his attackers ran off saying he was the wrong man. Aoyama had been carrying a lantern imprinted with the seal of another man.

Episode 9 (4/25/02)
Final Episode. The examiner from the Kitamachi Magistrate is found dead. Hachibei and Sojuro discover that he had been stabbed multiple times in the back. They are soon told to halt their investigations by their superiors. However, Sojuro refuses to give up.
