Episode 1
In Genroku era, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi behaves like a dictator.In the spring of 1701, Tsunayoshi assigns Asano Takuminokami to host an Imperial messenger of
Kyoto
. Meanwhile, the wedding of Chikara, a son of Oishi Kuranosuke, to Konami, a daughter of Kakogawa Honzo, is being prepared. Takuminokami goes to
Edo
as a host and meet Kira Kozukenosuke who manages ceremonies of bakufu. All the other hosts give a bribe to Kira but Takuminokami. Because of that, Kira gives him a hard time.
Episode 2
Oishi Kuranosuke tells retainers that their lord Takuminokami committed harakiri and they have to abandon
Ako
Castle
. The retainers insist on fighting with bakufu instead of abandoning the castle. However, the chief retainer Ohno Kurobe calms them down somehow.
Episode 3
Chikara, the son of Oishi Kuranosuke, visits Kakogawa Honzo’s residence to break off an engagement to Konami. Tonase, the wife of Honzo, begs for reconsideration but he closes his ears. Meanwhile, Kuranosuke tells the retainers that they all have to follow their master to the grave. On the day, they wear white gown and gather at
Ako
Castle
. Then Kuranosuke says an unexpected thing to them.
Episode 4
6 months after the surrender of
Ako
Castle
, Oishi Kuranosuke goes to
Edo
in order to handle his remaining business. While he is staying in
Edo
, he visits Aguri, the wife of Takuminokami, and Toda noTsubone. They want to know if Kuranosuke has an intention to avenge Takuminokami.
Episode 5
Oishi Kuranosuke and Riku move to Yamashina,
Kyoto
to enjoy the fast life. Rumors of his amours with a courtesan named Ukihashi become the talk of the town. Meanwhile, under orders from Chisaka Hyobu to protect Kira Kozukenosuke, Uesugi retainer Kobayashi Heihachiro begins recruiting skilled ronin fighters.
Episode 6
Kakogawa Honzo, the Tatsuno Clan chief retainer, pays a visit to Kuranosuke at his residence in Yamashina together with his wife, Tonase and daughter Konami.
Kakogawa
asks Kuranosuke to reconsider allowing Konami to marry Oishi Chikara, whose marriage talks had been broken off. Later, assassins sent by the Asano main family attack Kuranosuke during one of his flirtatious escapades in the Gion district. Only Honzo’s timely arrival saves Kuranosuke’s life.
Episode 7
In autumn of 1702, Kuranosuke and his men set out for
Edo
to kill Kozukenosuke. Yato Emoshichi bids farewell to his mother, Nami, and rushes after the others. In order to avoid arousing the government’s suspicion during his journey, Kuranosuke assumes the identity of Kakimi Gorobe, a steward of the Hino family. All goes well until the real Gorobe shows up at in Yoshiwara town.
Episode 8
Okano Kinuemon asks Otsuya, the daughter of carpenter with access to Kira’s residence, if he can see the floor plans of the mansion. Meanwhile, Oishi Kuranosuke stays at the home of shipping merchant Amanoya Rihei. Otaka Gengo gets hold of information about a tea party to be held at Kira’s mansion on December 15.
Episode 9
On December 14, 1703, Kuranosuke calls on Lady Yosen-in at the residence of a tertiary Asano family. The attack on Kira’s mansion is scheduled for that evening, the anniversary of the death of their lord, Asano Takuminokami, but Kuranosuke is unable to inform Lady Yosen-in of his true plans because he realizes a Kira spy has infiltrated the maidservants. That night, as Kira prepares for bed after enjoying himself at a tea party hosted at his residence, Kuranosuke and his 47 loyal ronin gather at the second floor of a noodle shop and proceed at last toward Kira’s mansion.
